I love Bikram Yoga. I wanna just shout it from the rooftops like I am some young girl swooning over a teen idol! It will be one whole week today of non-stop yoga, and I am feeling pretty fantastic.
For those of you unfamiliar with Bikram, let me explain. The Bikram method of Hatha Yoga is a series of 26 postures (asanas) and two breathing exercises (pranayamas) It is a progressive workout in which each posture stretches and strengthens the muscles, ligaments and joints needed for the next posture.
The Bikram method stimulates the organs, glands and nerves, and provides fresh oxygenated blood to the body. The class also helps cultivate concentration, patience, determination and self-discipline. Yes. Self-discipline. I know.
Bikram yoga is done in a heated room (appx 105 degrees F) to warm your muscles, prevent injury, allow a deeper workout, and cleanse your body by releasing toxins.
I tell you, it has been a challenge, a HUGE challenge, thus far, but everyday I complete my 90 minutes and, sopping wet with sweat, muscles quivering, walk out that door, I feel SO incredible about myself. I feel a sense of accomplishment I have not had since drama school. I love it.
The beautiful thing about yoga is that it can give you a high that no drug, booze or food could ever. There is no guilt in yoga. I love a good five course French meal, it makes you feel warm and fuzzy and happy....but there is still that guilt. That "I-really-enjoyed-myself-but-I-better-hit-the-gym" guilt. Yoga gives me the opportunity everyday to challenge myself and learn more about myself. And it makes me feel freakin' AWESOME while doing it!!
